Midway through the ride, the train stops. After spending a few weeks in Waldlager, Elli, her mother, and Bubi are boarded onto a train headed to Auschwitz. In the camp, Elli is reunited with her brother, Bubi. At Augsburg, Elli’s mother is nursed back to health.Īfter many, many months in Augsburg, the Germans take Elli and her mother to Waldlager, another camp (Jackson, 165). The people at Augsburg are more generous while those at Auschwitz were cruel and hostile.

Augsburg is a great change from Auschwitz. Another transition Elli and her mother make is going to Augsburg, a work camp (Jackson, 145).

Elli’s mother injures her back and almost died. Later on, Elli meets her cousins, but they are separated again. In Auschwitz, Elli is split up from her aunt and must take care of her mother. A month later, the German officers take Elli, her mother, and her aunt to Auschwitz, a work and death camp for Jewish and other people (Jackson, 70). Everyone in the Ghetto has to survive with a very limited amount of food and frequent roll calls in the scorching sun. Elli’s family has to share a very small apartment with another family. In the beginning, the Germans required Elli and her family to move to the Ghetto (Jackson, 41).

Their biggest challenge is surviving the many concentration camps they are sent to. Elli and her mother face many challenges throughout the book. In Auschwitz, Laura nearly starved herself so Elli wouldn’t go hungry. Her mother cares very much about Elli although she rarely shows it. In the concentration camps, Elli is the one that pushes her mother to keep on going even though she is scared herself. Elli is a persevering and persistent teenager. Elli and her mother are the most important characters in this book. Her family includes her brother, Bubi, her father, Markus, her mother, Laura, and her aunt, Serena. Elli’s family lives above The Friedmann General Store located in Somorja, Hungary. This book is about Elli Friedmann’s family and their life in Eastern Europe during Hitler’s invasion in 1943.   I read I Have Lived a Thousand Years by Livia Bitton-Jackson for my nonfiction reading project.
